The Extremadura region takes a bold step forward in the technology landscape by announcing the launch of its first quantum emulation service aimed at local companies and researchers. This groundbreaking initiative is set to significantly expand the capabilities of the Extremadura Supercomputing Center, known as COMPUTAEX, positioning the region as a key player in the field of quantum computing. The project represents a substantial investment of 600,000 euros, solidifying a strategic commitment to disruptive technologies that promise to reshape the future of research and business innovation.

With the introduction of the quantum emulation service, Extremadura will enable research institutions and companies to access advanced computing resources that were previously limited to larger technological hubs. This state-of-the-art offering is crucial for driving regional innovation, enhancing business competitiveness, and attracting new investments. Furthermore, the service complements the high-performance computing resources already available at COMPUTAEX, creating a comprehensive ecosystem for scientific and technological development.

The 600,000-euro investment in the quantum emulation service has been primarily funded by the State Research Agency with FEDER funds, underscoring the commitment of Spanish authorities to promote science and innovation. The remaining 15% contribution from the Extremadura regional government reflects local dedication to making the region a leader in quantum computing, aligned with other major centers of excellence across Spain. This joint effort reinforces Extremadura’s position within the EQC2024 program, aimed at strengthening research and development capabilities in emerging technologies.

Collaboration with the prestigious Japanese center RIKEN RQC-Fujitsu Collaboration Center adds immense value to the project by granting local researchers access to cutting-edge quantum emulation services. This international partnership is vital for knowledge exchange, scientific progress, and opening doors for future collaborations. Through this connection, Extremadura joins other autonomous communities in Spain—such as Madrid, Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Galicia—that already boast infrastructure and expertise in quantum computing.

Beyond providing the service, COMPUTAEX aims to support users through training, advisory services, and knowledge transfer. This comprehensive approach strengthens the region’s digital ecosystem by empowering professionals and fostering the development of innovative quantum-based solutions. The commitment to education and technical support distinguishes the initiative and promises to expand the technology’s impact across various economic and scientific sectors.

The launch of the quantum emulation service marks a historic moment for Extremadura, establishing it as an emerging hub in a strategic and high-value technological field. This initiative not only stimulates innovation but also contributes to the region’s economic diversification by creating new job opportunities and attracting specialized talent. Quantum computing, renowned for its revolutionary potential, becomes an accessible reality locally, with positive effects anticipated in the medium and long term.

The project further emphasizes the importance of public-private and international collaboration for scientific and technological advancement. The combination of financial resources, local expertise, and global partnerships sets a development model that can serve as a reference for other regions and countries. Extremadura demonstrates that investing in emerging technologies like quantum computing is essential to securing competitiveness and leadership in the global innovation arena.

In summary, Extremadura embarks on a new chapter with the implementation of the first quantum emulation service for companies and researchers, enhancing its Supercomputing Center and elevating its status on Spain’s technological map. This initiative reaffirms the region’s commitment to science, technology, and innovation, paving the way for significant breakthroughs and building a future rooted in cutting-edge knowledge and technology.
